NO HOLDS BARRED
Raja Petra Kamarudin
The Internet has been abuzz the last couple of days about the ‘accidental’ police report an NGO made against Malaysiakini. Those who had made the police report did not know the difference between Malaysiakini, The Malaysian Insider and Malaysia Today.
The following day, they ‘corrected’ the mistake and two more ‘Malay’ NGOs made a police report against Malaysia Today. While I am honoured that the news reports talk about Malaysiakini, The Malaysian Insider and Malaysia Today in the same breath, I have to correct this misperception and declare that Malaysia Today should not be compared to Malaysiakini or The Malaysian Insider.
Malaysiakini and The Malaysian Insider are proper or legitimate online newspapers or portals run by professional media personnel, most who have many years experience in the media industry. Malaysia Today, however, is not in that same league. We are not a proper or legitimate online newspaper. Neither are we run by professional media personnel. Malaysia Today is a ‘weapon’ that is meant to bring about political change in Malaysia.
We learned how useful the Internet can be back in 1998 when the Reformasi Movement first exploded onto the Malaysian political scene. More than 100 Reformasi websites mushroomed overnight to give Barisan Nasional a run for its money. Of course, then, most of these websites were aligned to Anwar Ibrahim and/or PAS. There were some that were aligned to DAP as well.
In 1998, however, there were only 280,000 Internet subscribers. But that was enough to sufficiently damage Barisan Nasional in the 1999 general election that was held about a year after the debut of Reformasi. No doubt the Internet was not the major contributor to the opposition victory in November 1999. But it did contribute enough, though in a small way, as to how Barisan Alternatif performed.
Then the opposition became complacent. Their 1999 ‘victory’ lulled them and put them to sleep. Not long after that DAP pulled out from Barisan Alternatif and that aggravated the problem. In the March 2004 general election, the voters demonstrated their disgust for the opposition coalition.
I have already talked about this matter so many times in the past so there is no need to go over all the issues and statistics again. The bottom line is: the opposition practically got wiped out.
Soon after that, Anwar Ibrahim was released from incarceration. There was jubilation all around. My wife, Marina, and I stood on the steps of the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya, quite amused at the chanting and cheering going on. My phone rang but I could not hear properly because of the noise. I handed the phone to Marina, who has better hearing than me. “It’s the BBC from London,” she told me as she handed me back the phone.
“Hold on,” I shouted into the phone. “It’s so noisy here. Let me move to a quieter place.”
Marina and I quickly walked to the side of the Palace of Justice where it was quieter and I spoke to the chap from the BBC.
“We heard Anwar has just been released. Can we get your statement?”
“Sure, but why me?” I asked.
“Well, you are the Director of the Free Anwar Campaign and you run the freeanwar dot com website. I suppose you are now out of a job since Anwar has just been released. What do you plan to do now?”
“I suppose you could put it that way,” I laughed. “I must be the only Director who got retrenched from his job because he is successful.”
The BBC chap laughed and asked, “So what do you intend to do now, now that you have been retrenched?”
“I am going to now focus fulltime on the new website I just started three weeks ago.”
“Oh, what is it called?”
“Malaysia Today. It’s at malaysia dash today dot net.”
“You said you started this website three weeks ago? Does this mean you anticipated that Anwar would be released?”
“Yes, I did. In fact, that was one of the first articles I wrote on Malaysia Today. I said that Anwar would be released with a two-one verdict and that the lady judge would be the sole dissenting voice.”
“How did you know? Do you own a crystal ball?”
“It’s my business to know. That is what I do. I find out what people don’t know or try to hide and publish the story, while crossing my fingers in the hope that I am right.”
“So what do you hope to achieve with your new website?”
“Let me put it this way. It took us six years to free Anwar from jail. But only Anwar is free. Malaysians are not yet free. And Malaysians will never be free until they can be allowed freedom of expression and freedom of choice. It may take us 60 more years to free Malaysians, I don’t know. I may even never see that happen in my lifetime. But that is the mission and vision of Malaysia Today, to free Malaysians by allowing them freedom of expression. Freeing Anwar was phase one. Phase two is to free Malaysians.”
“Thank you Raja Petra. And I wish you luck in your new endeavour. Can we call you again if we need anything further?”
“Sure, no problem. Bye.”
That was my ‘interview’ with the BBC on the steps of the Palace of Justice on the morning of 2 September 2004. Malaysia Today was then only 20 days old. But Malaysia Today was created with a vision and a mission. It is not, as the government said, a hobby of bored and unemployed housewives. Malaysia Today was created to gain back the territory that we lost in the March 2004 general election when Barisan Nasional performed its best ever in the history of Malaysian elections.
“What do you think we are going to see?” Marina asked me. “This is going to involved a hell of a lot of work. And you are going to suffer all sorts of hassle from the police. Is it going to be worth it?”
“Hun (we call each other Hun, which is short for honey, not hantu),” I told Marina. “Come the next election, in 2008 or 2009, Malaysia Today is going to be the weapon we use to hit Barisan Nasional where it hurts most. We are going to engage Barisan Nasional in the cyber-world and use hit and run guerrilla tactics. They will be running around in circles trying to duck our hit and run attacks but they will not be able to do anything about it. By then the Internet will be the most powerful ‘terrorist’ weapon in the elections. And we will be there, ready to take on Barisan Nasional in 2008 or 2009.”
Yes, in 1998, when we first started using the Internet to fight Barisan Nasional, there were only 280,000 Internet subscribers against 8 million registered voters. Today, ten years on, there are almost 16 million Internet subscribers against 12 million registered voters.
Over the last ten years, the number of registered voters increased only 50%. However, in that same period, the number of Internet subscribers increased 328.9% (according to the official statistics). Today, the Internet reaches 62.8% of the Malaysian population. Malaysia has more Internet subscribers than it has voters. (See the statistics below).
Yes, that was our plan back in 2004 when we launched Malaysia Today. No, Malaysia Today is not a newspaper. And it is not in the same league as Malaysiakini and The Malaysian Insider. Malaysia Today is a guerrilla outfit. We are cyber terrorists. Our job is to hit the government whenever and wherever we can. And if hit and run is what it takes, then hit and run is what it will have to be.
We almost succeeded in meeting our aspirations in March 2008. But, in our books, that is a job only half done. We have to finish the job. We have to complete what we started back in 1998. And the completion would be when Barisan Nasional has been brought down from its high horse and made to eat humble pie. We will consider to have met our objective when the government admits that it serves the people, and not the people who serve the government.
On a slight digression, when I was in Kamunting from September to November last year, Marina sent me loads of books to read and one of those books was The Art of War by Sun Tzu. It was a most interesting book and took me only a day to finish. I must say that book gave me new insight into guerrilla warfare.
The government calls the Barisan Rakyat Bloggers cyber terrorists. Actually, I had never thought of it that way. I suppose, under the circumstances, since we have been classified as cyber terrorists, then we have no choice but to act as one. And terrorists must master the art of hit and run.

The Art of War: Sūn Zǐ Bīng Fǎ
Chapter summary
1. Laying Plans explores the five key elements that define a successful outcome (the way, seasons, terrain, leadership, and management). By thinking, assessing and comparing these points you can calculate a victory, deviation from them will ensure failure. Remember that war is a very grave matter of state.
2. Waging War explains how to understand the economy of war and how success requires making the winning play, which in turn, requires limiting the cost of competition and conflict.
3. Attack by Stratagem defines the source of strength as unity, not size, and the five ingredients that you need to succeed in any war.
4. Tactical Dispositions explains the importance of defending existing positions until you can advance them and how you must recognise opportunities, not try to create them.
5. Energy explains the use of creativity and timing in building your momentum.
6. Weak Points & Strong explains how your opportunities come from the openings in the environment caused by the relative weakness of your enemy in a given area.
7. Manoeuvring explains the dangers of direct conflict and how to win those confrontations when they are forced upon you.
8. Variation in Tactics focuses on the need for flexibility in your responses. It explains how to respond to shifting circumstances successfully.
9. The Army on the March describes the different situations in which you find yourselves as you move into new enemy territories and how to respond to them. Much of it focuses on evaluating the intentions of others.
10. Terrain looks at the three general areas of resistance (distance, dangers, and barriers) and the six types of ground positions that arise from them. Each of these six field positions offers certain advantages and disadvantages.
11. The Nine Situations describe nine common situations (or stages) in a campaign, from scattering to deadly, and the specific focus you need to successfully navigate each of them.
12. The Attack by Fire explains the use of weapons generally and the use of the environment as a weapon specifically. It examines the five targets for attack, the five types of environmental attack, and the appropriate responses to such attack.
13. The Use of Spies focuses on the importance of developing good information sources, specifically the five types of sources and how to manage them.

RPK your website may not be a newspaper but I read it more often than any newspaper and it has more substance and I believe truth than any other newspaper or media that is published throughout Malaysia.
I feel sick just seeing the headlines of the NST or the Star these days, this propaganda machines have no shame what so ever and the editors of those newspapers deserve the sleepless nights I'm sure they have for publishing the drivel they publish.
Thank god for you and your drive to tell Malaysia the truth about what is really happening.

Talking about "The Art of War" , another MORE (Not equally) potent/powerful weapon is the I-Ching.
Not many Chinese scholars can master it,and so far none of the non-mandarin scholars can .
I can safely say, that include you. Otherwise mahathir wont dare to call you "my boy" (but, "my master")and najib has long been in your pocket (or jail) and Perak Crisis would have reversed overnight. That was used to much effect 1700yrs ago during the " Three Kingdom" era by Zhu GeLiang.

Now people are more matured and well informed about what is going on, and this is where the evil bn who controls everything will not stand a chance when the time comes, their only way is to fall.

Allah Allmighty never looses the war, just like Nabi Muhammad never lost the war. Perhaps we can all loose one or two battles, but these lost battles is only meant to teach us and strengthen us for the bigger war. The War of Islam is now not on other religions, but on those leaders and goons who parade around as Mulsims leaders but in actual fact leech, sodomise and rape Allah Allmight's bounty that was meant for his meek sheeps. Islam which connotes justice, truth, humility and fairness will prevail soon. Let us all rally behind the true party of Prophet Muhhammad which is PAS.

Pete, without a doubt, your Malaysia-Today blog fed us with juicy information about what was going on in the Corridors of Power. By so doing, you revealed the depth of the treachery against the people of Malaysia. While you did dramatise events and sometimes stretched the truth, when some of your more outlandish revelations proved to in fact be quite accurate, your blog gained credibility and following.
Malaysia-Today also offered readers the never before opportunity to vent their frustrations. As to be expected, like a child with a new toy, some of the commentators went overboard with their venting and some of the venting almost got you into trouble. But then, some of your own statements got you into more trouble, so you can't complain too much. smilies/smiley.gif Nevertheless, this opportunity to vent must have had some trigger effect that allowed more and more people to face and recognise their frustrations. People who had pretended that things were hunky-dory now began to feel frustrated enough to risk wanting change.
I have no statistical basis for this but am guessing that the success of MT also triggered other political blogs to sprout. If this is true, MT can claim to be responsible for the sea change in cyberspace. The tremendous power of the Information Age was being brought to bear on the Malaysian political situation. The antics and dirty tricks of the bn were put to scrutiny and their politics was found wanting.
I don't know whether you had clearly foreseen all this coming to pass. I expect that you planned to continue the cyberbattle because you recognised information as the key ingredient in the battle against the entrenched forces. But, as in all legendary battles of good against evil, assistance often comes from unexpected sources. The momentum of your battle began to build up rather rapidly.
Even 6 months before the event, I don't imagine that anyone would have predicted the tsunami of March 2008. But event piled upon event, the laywers walked, Bersih massed and Hindraf marched, the inhumanity of the powers was laid bare, the people said "enough" and demanded change, the opposition parties cobbled together an electoral pact... and the 2/3 domination of the bn was demolished.
At that time, many had wished that the bn could have been defeated at Federal as well. But I don't think the opposition parties were in any state to rule. We may have ended up in chaos and the bn may have come back stronger than ever. Today, the bn may continue to wield the big stick, but I think they are weaker than they have ever been. Meanwhile, weak elements in the Barisan Rakyat have come to the surface and are being excised.
Malaysia is primed for regime change. And we have you to thank for that. Stay well, stay safe and continue to engineer this war. There may be many more battles to fight, or there may be just a few, but the people want change and, eventually, they will get change.
Onward Barisan Rakyat.

Dear RPK,
The greatest power of the Internet is its capacity to create a web of people, as seen in the phenomenon of facebook and twitter.
This is a very powerful mean for mass motivation - civil disobedience for example. The technology is ready but we are not making full use of it yet. It will require an initial council of incorruptible people with impeccable integrity (like yourself), plus a bit of technical knowhow.
This should be the next strategic move. Malaysia Today readers has to progress from passive readers to become active participant in concrete civil actions on a moment-to-moment basis. If we can get this going, it is going to be really BIG and powerful...

Behold, the Invincible and Invisible Raja Petra, the ultimate strategist that Malaysian cyber world has ever known (not even emperor mahathir could stop him). A display of finese and master class act in the internet realm unparalleled by none. He will take the bulls not by the horns, but aim straight for the ballz.
His sharpest weapon? Truth, because sheer truth cuts the deepest, uncovering layers of lies and propaganda like James Bond through lingerie. He leaves no stone unturned, mesmerizing the masses with unwritten stories hidden between the lines in the highly corrupted information machinery like TV3, RTM, Utusan and New Straits Times.
"He (Raja Petra) is The Man" (Barack Obama)
"Other bloggers may be monkeys, but this one is King Kong!" (Khairy Jamaluddin)
"The next best thing after the internet itself" (Bill Gates)
"There is no way, just no damn way that you can hide anything from him... Raja Petra will make short stories long and long stories short" (Najib Tun Razak)

RPK, your assignment, as you had chosen to accept it, was to terrorize the gomen of the day. Therefore, you have to continue your good work even when bn had fallen. PR needs checks and balances too. smilies/wink.gif

When Susan Boyles sang "I dreamed a dream" on BGT, her performance stunned everyone and she became an overnight sensation as witnessed by the 100 Mn hits on youtube. Similarly, when MT reveals a political truth, a "star" is born in our hearts. I must confess that I am a MT addict. I chose to be. In Pete we trust. His writings are the Gold Standard for proper journalism. Keep up the excellent work and give us more as we have been starved and manipulated by the bn propaganda machine all these years. I subsribe to Malaysiakini but I am willing to pay ten times that amount to fund MT.

The chinese world view had always been about harmony. They recognised that oftentimes this harmony can be severely disrupted thro' the activities and greed of man. The art of war is not an art to defeat the enemy but an art to bring back peace and harmony to society. Key to understanding this can be found in a number of its aphorism.
If we keep our focus on the final goal of bringing about the precious state of peace and harmony we will be better guided than a set of dead aphorisms subjected to our interpretations to suit our current plan and/or agenda.
May peace and love prevail.

When the Art of War combines with Science of War, then our levels of awareness can be raised. I have never read the Art of War but still there is no denying that survival itself on a sub-conscious level, imbibes the principles laid therein. The Art of War is also present in our very cells! To recognize this fact is illuminating. To nourish the existing phenomenon we incorporate the Science of War. Alas, as in many other destructive capacity, we have to a large extent, exposed ourselves to action which causes in-balance. Let's take a queer example, when Nah!Cheap took to his walkabout ala mesra rakyat, at Pudu Raya, he took a drink from one of the stalls.. seemed so humble right? But then it might appear to those easily alarmed, that he exposed himself to a high risk. Equally not many know that Nah!Cheap though born with a silver spoon, chooses to appease his taste buds by consuming his local favorites, rojak mamak being one of them. His driver used to buy it from one roadside hawker who plied next to the Bangsar Shopping Complex. So just by looking at his figure and that of his Fat Spouse, one can surmise that both will be in for an interesting time with wellness challenges. I take my malt and my tobacco in the manner that I do, differently from others. I want my nicotine fix sans tar. I fix my malt in the manner it brings immense delight to me and those who are foolish to partake from my vat of poison. They are incredibly shocked too that Science can be baffling. I made a decision, a conscious one, that this website will be my sanctuary stuck to the decision. Hence I have never regretted to be ears .. err.. eyes to what is being espoused here. I learn so much from the various contributors that I regard everyone of them peers. Thanks Pete.

After RPK use Malaysia Today to give pressure to government for the freeing of Anwar, and now we should help him with free all Malaysian mind. Actually Malaysiakini, Malaysia Today and Malaysia Insider have share a common principle, that's We Are Always Standing With Underdogs!
If we can succeed in changing the Federal Government for the first time in our history, Malaysiakini, Malaysia Today and Malaysia Insider should stand still for check and balance for the future government. The job will never end, and this job might pass to our future generation once a day, just the different job but with the same ideology.
Ten years ago, Malaysia Today and Malaysiakini fighting for the releasing of Anwar. Luckily both of them save a future leader for us.....
Now, we are going to help all Pro-Opposition blogger or online news to make sure this leader (Anwar Ibrahim) become the Leader of all Malaysia--That's the Prime Minister Post for him!
And in the future, maybe we can't see the day, but surely we can pass the job to provide "Check and Balance" for the sake of our beautiful country!

During the 1930s the I-Ching was used by the Japanese militarists to evaluate their war strategy. Two opposing groups had their ideas on how to conduct their military campaign: 1)First occupy China, and then the rest of Asia, and 2)get the Western colonies first and then aim at China. Repeatedly, the I-Ching answer was that option number one would end in failure, but the stronger military faction headed by Tojo refused to accept the conclusion and injected their own interpretations. Of course, this group also played safe by sending the Imperial Troops - the elite of Japan's military - for their China conquest. They failed as Japan's military best were bogged down by the CCP's guerilla warfare which owed a lot to the ideas of - here's the great irony - Sun Tzu!!! Meanwhile their desperate attacks on Pearl Harbor sealed their fate as American military might was brought to bear on the over-expanded Empire of the Rising Sun.

Hoo! You are devious! Putrajaya must be tearing their hairs out at the moment. Have you read Sun Tzi's Art of War? If not go get a copy. There are more tricks in there you can use. Get them frothing at their mouths and tear out their balls in frustration. "
Somehow I had that strange feeling you were practising Sun Tzi's Art of War. There is another Chinese strategem that you should practise. It advises that when all else fails, run and fight again another day. And that,I am happy to note is exactly what you are doing now. A dead hero is no use to anyone.

Nobody believes their blinking lies and propaganda any
more. Everything they ever did was done first and foremost
with the intention of increasing their power. It is the logic
of one party rule. Win total power then justify holding on
to it.Complete control is the goal. This if really feudalism
in disguise. With the politicians replacing the aristocracy.

If you read Malaysia Today you will have company feeding you with information on current public discourses being chat about at Surau, mosque, coffee shop/mamak stalls, cybercafes, eateries outlets such as Kentucky, Mac D, coffee houses etc.
You will be well informed as to what is Altantunya, C4, mamak Kutty, mamak Pangkor, bodohwi, najis the back banger, big dotty @ bomoh betina, the handsome RPK botak, umno bodoh, Sultan bodoh, umno lanun, Menteri takut bini (yb rice) etc.
One thing for sure, while frequenting these places, claiming that you are an umno member is strictly forbidden and/or taboo, or else the other customers will give you an irritating starry look thinking that you are from outer space!

You da man! Gimme more RPK, more RPK, till the morning comes.
Here's Bob Dylan's song for Johanna and RPK,
aint it just like the night to play tricks when you’re trying to be so quiet?
we sit here, stranded, though we all do our best to deny it
and Louise holds a handful of rain, tempting you to defy it
lights flicker from the opposite loft
in this room the heat pipes just cough
the country music station plays soft
but there’s nothing, really nothing to turn off
just Louise and her lover so entwined
and these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind
in the empty lot where the ladies play blind man’s bluff with the key chain
and the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the D train
we can hear the night watchman take his flahslight out,
and ask if its himself or them who should be insane
but Louise she’s allright, she‘s just near
she’s delicate, she seems like the mirror
but she just makes it all too concise and too clear
that Johanna’s not here
the ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face
where these visions of johanna have now taken my place
little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously
he brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously
and when bringing her name up he speaks of her farewell kiss to me
he’s sure got a lot of gall
to be so useless and all
muttering small talk at the wall
while I’m in the hall
how can I explain it’s so hard to get on
and these visions of Johanna they kept me up past the dawn
inside the musuems Infinity’s going up on trial
voices echo “this is what salvation must be like after awhile”
but Mona Lisa must have had the highway blues, you can tell by the way she smiles
see the primitive wallflower freeze
and the jellyfaced women all sneeze
hear the one with the moustache say, “jeez,
I can’t find my knees!”
jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
but these visions of Johanna they make it all seem so cruel
the peddler now speaks to the countess who’s pretending to care for him
saying “name me someone that’s not a parasite and I’ll go out and say a prayer for him.”
but like Louise always says, ”You can’t look at much can you man, as she herself
she prepares for him
and Madonna she still has not showed
you see this empty cage now corrode
where her cape of the stage once had flowed
the fiddler he now steps to the road
he writes “everythings been returned which was owed”
on the back of a fish truck that loads
while my conscience explodes
the harmonicas play the skeleton keys in the rain
and these visions of Johanna are now all that remain.
