(The Star) - The Sessions Court here issued a warrant of arrest against Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamarudin on Thursday after he failed to turn up for his sedition trial.

His lawyer J. Chandra informed judge Rozina Ayob that his client did not turn up in court on the grounds he is on a self-imposed exile from the state for “reasons that are well known.”

“You know these ‘well known reasons,’ so please highlight them to the court,” Rozina said.

“The accused is posting his reasons on his website this morning,” said Chandra.

“You expect the court to go through that, is it?” the judge said.

Chandra then went out to explain that for over a month now, Raja Petra, 58, has posted articles or comments on issues in relation to the Selangor royal house that have angered some members of his own family who have demanded an apology.

On Malaysia Today, explaining why he did not attend court Thursday, Raja Petra wrote, “My family then gave me an ultimatum. I was to either make that public apology or else my family would insert an advertisement in the mainstream newspapers practically distancing itself from me, which could be interpreted as disowning me ....

“I went into exile outside Selangor ... . It has to be noted that this has always been the punishment for any member of the Selangor Royal Family who is considered durhaka (traitorous) since the beginning of the Selangor Sultanate more than 250 years ago.

He also wrote that another reason why he did not attend court was the he did not expect to get a fair trial.

In court on Thursday, his lawyer Chandra added, “You have to bear in mind that he is a member of royalty and this self-imposed exile is a punishment he has handed out to himself.

His wife Marina Lee, who is also his bailor, was also absent.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Shahidani Aziz asked for a warrant of arrest to be issued against Raja Petra and a notice of showcause for his wife and bailor Marina. The judge granted both and set May 22 for mention.

Raja Petra, a former Internal Security Act detainee, had on May 6 2008 claimed trial to publishing a seditious article on his Malaysia Today news portal on April 25 of that same year.

He is accused of publishing the article Let’s send the Altantuya murderers to hell on the website www.malaysia-today.net.

The charge under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948 carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or three years' jail or both upon conviction.

Nampak muka Najib hari ini bila diberitahu RPK tidak hadir di mahkamah? "Mukanya pucat sikit, kemudian nampak bimbang, " menurut Berita Malaysia.

I hope both of you, great souls have planned your exit well.
It is inevitable that when evil reigns supreme, both of you must take a leave of absence from Malaysian soil.
Take care.
But, also, please continue to lead the rakyat's struggle against the corrupt and evil forces ruining our country.

RPK, for once is getting stupid!! Why the exile? What has he got to gain from it? Why can't he be like all the rest of the Malaysians. He is being so egoistic that it is a pain to read about it.

RPK, while you are glorifying in your massive egoism and stupidity, the rakyat who loves you are 'suffering' whenever you are punished by the law.

Come on lah!! RPK, please be normal.

Good on ya RPK. We all love to watch the outcome of this CAT and MOUSE show in a kangaroo court of Malaysia. Sometimes, I don't understand how some of these judges and prosecutors think; they know well that they are working for a corrupted regime yet they still keep a close eye and letting the whole injustice to go on. I wonder where are their conscience? Do they have one? Are they not afraid that something bad will befall their children or their descendants someday? I guess, money has clouded their conscience.

Million dollars to save 'His freedom', if, if, we, the MT's folks raised million dollars to exchange for 'RPK's freedom', will all of us do that?I don't mind to part with my million dollars in exchange for his freedom!I can afford to lose million dollars just for him, but I can't buy him with million dollars!Just imagine how precious this human being to the society of our country,we will pawn away everything just in exchange for this man, this is the 'Call of the Malaysian', I dont mind I lost the oppoturnity to invest in the recent ASN or ASW, but I sacrify for this man's freedom!

This is shocking. Haunting a man with dignity. Malaysians must know that this gentleman Prince, RPK, alone chnaged the face of Malaysia.
The judge, Rozina Ayob, knows this as fact. But she has to act and think independently.

Dear Prime Minister,
Step in and stop this charade once and for all. Let RPK go. In the first RPK should not have been charged under ISA.
You know this.
You also know that what RPK writes in the voice of the people of Malaysia 'Malaysia Today' is true.
You have been given a mandate to govern the country. Now do so.
Your first humane act should be to free RPK of all charges.
Even if you are not a good PM, people will remember your one kind act of humanism.
Blee you RPK

I'm so glad that RPK has finally decided to seek refuge outside and not fight the unfair establishment head-on through the courts. If we had a truly independent judiciary, then he does not have to worry about being arrested because he will get his day in court. But we all know that he will never ever get a fair trial so what's the point of being stupid and make a sacrifice of oneself when it is not a level playing field? If he goes into the slammer again, you can be sure they will never ever let him out. He is much more useful fighting from the outside rather than langusihing in jail where he can do nothing but just serve as a testimony of the injustice in Malaysian and also provide inspiration to all Malaysians to continue with the battle ( which we are slowly but surely going to win).
RPK, I do hope that you're somewhere safe now and thus can do even more damage to accelerate the demise of the BN government. Rock on, RPK !!!

Since when do the courts of Boleh Land conduct themselves in a fair manner.

Flashback to the Anwar's sodomy trial, to the recent Perak speaker case, and to many many other cases too numerous to mention .... and of course to the Altantuya case...

If anyone expects a fair Malaysian trial keep on dreaming .

There has been rumours going around that Pete has gone back to his mother country England and is now intending to a Phd in International Relations in Oxford on how to effectively uncover sosial ills and travesty of justice by the powerful and influential. So Razak Baginda has got the company of a good friend Pete to pursue Phd in the Trinity College of Oxford. Can someone verify whether this rumour is true.

Even his holiness and exalted ulama Ayotallah Khomenei of Iran had to seek years of refuge in France before he saw fruition in bringing down a despotic regime of the former playboy Shah of Iran. Now the people of Iran are truly democractic and amply guided by the Religious ulamas that ensure that Iran would not fall in to the trap of uncontrolled ills of materialism that should be shunned. If only truly follows the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, then and only then will one understand ulamas in the like of Ayatollah Khomenei and our Tok Guru Nik Azia. Don't forget that too much wealth aggrandized from the blessings of Almighty Allah and stolen from his people and meek followers is one of the biggest sin in Islam. Any many of our corrupt scumbag leaders are all awaiting judgement day for these very crime on humanity.

If what Pete says is true, then and with due respect, I am a bit disappointed with HRH the Sultan of Selangor. I always thought Tuanku is far more open-minded and in tune with the aspirations of the rakyat, specifically the anak anak Selangor, than so many others. Then again, I think Pete is not exactly the table-talk type of guy, so I guess it was difficult for the Palace to get him to sit and discuss matters. Still, Tuanku, I think he should be supported for his fight against corruption and a better Malaysia.
